Mice and Game Controllers
Beginning in the late 1990’s I started a series of works to transform everyday desktop and gaming interface technologies into mixed media sculptures. I started these works at a time when computer mice in my teaching lab would routinely break from overuse. Rather than throw away these broken mice, I started to use these as materials for a variety of sculptures. The first was the “Heart Mouse” pictured at right. Eventually I came upon the idea to connect a pencil to my functioning mouse - “The Artist’s Mouse” became the entry point towards engaging video games in my work. Through these ongoing works the intent is to reify everyday devices of interaction and play into objects that speak to our evolving relationship with our machines.
